Cinco de Mayo—Cinco de Mayo commemorates  the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.  Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States.

On Saturday, April 27, 2013  at Pepper Park, National City will mark the occasion with a celebration of the community’s diverse culture through mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods.  “This is a unique family event that celebrates our community and offers the public an opportunity to enjoy the beauty and splendor of Cinco de Mayo, from its roots to contemporary manifestations of Mexican culture.”-Councilmember Luis Natividad, City of National City.

This event celebrates the rich and vibrant history of San Diego’s multicultural community with a drug and alcohol free festival. The event offers the community a healthy environment to celebrate culture, diversity and, and active lifestyles by participating in fun and interactive activities such as dancing, sporting demonstrations, and access to community resources promoting health and wellness.

Several food vendors will be dishing out some of their delicious renditions of Mexican cuisine. FREE entertainment will include live performances from regional bands. Enjoy interactive dance presentations from Zumba to the traditional Bailet Folkloriko.  New event elements have been added this year including the Mariachi competition.

This mariachi festival was created by HMC Advertising in 1999, and originally held at the Viejas Outlet Center.  HMC Advertising coordinated the first two San Diego County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Mariachi Festivals and Radio Latina’s “Fiestas Patrias” Mariachi Festival.   The proposed event in National City will be jointly administered by the National City Chamber of Commerce, the City of National City, and HMC Advertising.  We are confident that this partnership will deliver a first rate event to the San Diego region and raise the visibility of arts and culture among youth.

Community organizations will be present to educate the public about health and safety resources.  Don’t miss out on this unique Cinco de Mayo festival and Mariachi festival!

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in National City on Saturday, April 27th at Pepper Park.
