National City, CA (Thursday, October 21, 2010)– The National City Chamber of Commerce together with the City of National City, San Diego Ship Repair Association, and the Unified Port of San Diego will honor the men and women of service in the Unites States Navy during Salute to Navy Ship Board Reception on October 21st.

National City’s Salute to Navy has been a longstanding tradition for the past 54 years.  With strong ties to the Navy station, National City holds this event every year during the month of October and jointly celebrates the Navy’s birthday. This is the first and longest running event of its kind in the United States.


The Salute to Navy Shipboard Reception is attended by civic and business leaders, community members, navy and military personnel, and public officials. Over 300 guests have been invited. The Chamber and the City of National City will recognize the Outstanding Sailor of the year.

Honoring Sailor of the Year - YN1 (SW/NW) Amy L. Hoffner

Amy L. Hoffner was born and raised in Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey.  She graduated from Manasquan High School in 1992 and attended Jersey City State College for 2 ½ years.

She enlisted in the Navy and completed recruit training in Orlando, Florida.  Her first duty assignment was USS FRANK CABLE (AS 40) in Guam, USA.  While assigned to Admin Department, she worked for the Admin office, Command Master Chief and the Executive Officer.  Her tour was very demanding and was advanced to Petty Officer Third Class.  During her tour, she received a Commanding Officer’s Letter of Appreciation and a Flag Letter of Commendation from COMSUBGRU SEVEN.

Following her tour onboard USS FRANK CABLE, she received orders to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Command, Diego Garcia.  She immediately became a great asset to the command while assuming duties as the Commanding Officer’s secretary.  Her impressive accomplishments earned her Junior Sailor of the Quarter and a Commanding Officer’s Letter of Commendation. 

Once reporting to Fleet Aviation Training Group Pacific Detachment Barbers Point, Hawaii she held the position of Assistant Admin Officer.  She was an instrumental part in the base closure of Barbers Point and moving the command to Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay and awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Sailor of the Quarter.  Due to the under manning of the Yeoman’s in Command In Chief Pacific Fleet, she was selected out of five Yeoman’s for orders to Commander In Chief Pacific Fleet, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as a Flag Yeoman.  As a Flag Yeoman, her career excelled as she advanced to Petty Officer Second Class and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal.   

 Her following tour of duty took her to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 14 in Atsugi Japan (forward deployed).  Upon arrival, she excelled in and out of her rate and earned the Enlisted Air Warfare pin.  She completed a five-month deployment onboard USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63) and earned a Flag Letter of Commendation from COMCARGRU FIVE and her second Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.  Upon detaching, she advanced to Petty Officer First Class.

Following a successful tour at HS-14, she received orders to PCU HALSEY (DDG 97) in Pascagoula, Mississippi.  She quickly became acclimated and assumed the duties as Ship’s Secretary and she took on all Administrative responsibilities for the Precommissioning.  Her drive for success and thirst for knowledge led her to earning the Enlisted Surface Warfare pin.
Once completing her tour on USS HALSEY she received orders to Naval Base San Diego, California.  After checking onboard her knowledge, expertise and dedication contributed to the Admin Office’s success.  After nine months of being onboard, she was selected for an Individual Augmentee to Iraq, from December 2007 to December 2008, where she earned a Bronze Star for her valiant performance. 

YN1(SW/AW) Hoffner is currently the Admin Department Leading Petty Officer for Naval Base San Diego.  She supervises 31 Sailors throughout three divisions.  She is currently pursuing a degree as a Physical Therapist.  She is married to William J. Hoffner, who is stationed at ACU-1 as a Hull Technician First Class.  YN1(SW/AW) Hoffner’s awards include the Bronze Star, Navy Commendation Medal(2), Navy Achievement Medal (2), and Good Conduct (5).
